Why You Should Replace Your Sunscreen Every Year
If you're still reaching for last summer’s sunscreen, it might be time to check the expiration date. I see many clients unknowingly using expired or ineffective sunscreen, thinking they're protected—when in reality, they may not be getting the coverage they need.
Here’s why replacing your sunscreen yearly is a must:
1. Sunscreen Has an Expiration Date
Like most skincare products, sunscreens come with an expiration date. After this date, the active ingredients that protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays break down and lose effectiveness. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of about 1-3 years, but once opened, heat and air exposure can shorten that.
2. Ingredients Can Degrade Faster Than You Think
If your sunscreen has been sitting in a hot car, beach bag, or bathroom cabinet, temperature fluctuations may speed up degradation. This not only affects how well it protects you but can also alter its texture, making it less pleasant to apply.
3. Reduced Protection = Higher Risk
Using old or expired sunscreen can lead to:
Sunburns
Premature aging
Increased risk of sun damage or skin cancer
All because the product isn't doing its job properly anymore!
4. Your Skin’s Needs Might Have Changed
Over the year, your skin can change—whether due to seasonal shifts, hormonal changes, or new skincare routines. It’s the perfect time to reassess:
Do you need a lighter formula?
Want added hydration?
Prefer a tinted SPF option?
Time to Restock!
If it’s been a year (or more!) since you last purchased your sunscreen, I highly recommend replacing it with a fresh, effective formula. Feel free to ask for a recommendation at your next appointment or email me at melissa@beewellspa.com. Let’s find the best sunscreen for your skin type!
